Animal Abuse

Animal abusement is a very ignored problem that is ongoing throughout the world. Some people might say that animal abuse is just when you hurt them. But, It’s not. Animal abuse is any act of cruelty -whether it’s leaving your dog outside, chained to a doghouse or beating the animal ruthlessly- against the animal. Abuse comes in three ways, neglect, physical abuse, and forcing them into breeding. Many people don’t think of animal abuse as one of the world’s flaw. But it is. In fact, it keeps getting worse. More and more pets get tortured daily and it needs to stop! Putting an end to animal abuse doesn’t take the whole world to see eye-to-eye on the matter. It only takes one person to stand up for what’s right. “It only takes one person to change the world”
First, there are three main types of animal abusement. One of them is neglection. Neglecting an animal is the failure to provide basic care required for an animal to thrive. For example, some people will leave their pet unattended outside all day no matter the weather. What people have to understand is this is animal abuse. However, there are some much more cruel ways of animal abuse through neglection. For instance, some people just throw their pet onto the streets just because they don’t want it anymore. Thus, the ratio of homeless animals to humans is five to one. Additionally, only seven to twenty percent of pets will find their forever home. Some pets are let alone to fend for themselves so long on the streets they began to get sick (see image) or maybe even die.
In the article “Pet Overpopulation” by the American Humane Society they say to “think before you buy a pet,” thus, reducing the number of pets on the street. In “Teenage Girl is Dogs Best Friend” by Briar Marbeck, one teenage activist Faye Carey is a six-teen year old girl who helps rehome pets. So far, she has been able to rehome over sixty pets! Animal neglect is one way of animal abuse. No matter how small the act of neglection is, it is hurting an animal.
Next, there are three main types of animal abusement. One of them is physical abuse. Physical abuse to an animal is the act of inflicting physical pain, suffering, or death on an animal. For example, this dog (see image) has been burned by his owner. This dog was going through unbearable pain just because his owner got mad at his dog. I am realizing that people who do this are just flat out stupid. Why would they buy a pet and then inflict unnecessary pain on them? Other methods of physical abuse abuse are skinning, hitting, kicking, trapping, basically, things that can hurt the animal. Physical abusement doesn’t just happen from the owners. it also happens from puppy mills and certain breeders. Puppy mills starve the dogs and keep them locked up in a cage. “Once an animal is put into a puppy mill. Law requires them to wait forty-eight hours till they can euthanize (put to sleep) them,” says Pet Abandonment. What, Why, and Prevention. Also, some breeders, if one of their animals is not selling, they’ll kill them using methods such as drowning. They too, starve the animals. This makes me think that if I want to get a pet without giving money to these terrible breeders or ruthless puppy mills, I wouldn’t be able to. But that is not true. A good place to get animals is at a non profit shelter or a responsible breeder. Responsible breeders are breeders that will only breed when they are certain that they animal will have a home. To stop physical abuse, if you see an animal who is getting abused, bring it to a non profit shelter.
Lastly, there are three main types of animal abuse. One of them is when you force the animals into breeding. When animals are forced into breeding, they reproduce like crazy. Thus, there isn’t enough homes for all of the animals. For instance, the picture below claims that in three years one boy that isn’t neutered and one girl that isn’t spayed, cat or dog as young as four months old, can make either three hundred eighty-two cats or five hundred and twelve dogs.
There are about ten thousand humans born daily and about seventy thousand pets born daily. “The main cause of pet overpopulation is the breeders” says, The American Humane Society. Some breeders just keep on breeding the pets in hopes of getting more cash. Also, some owners cause this to happen too. They forget to sterilize their pets. Sterilizing your pets is when you neuter them if they are a boy and spay them if they are a girl and this causes them not to be able to breed. To help stop animal overpopulation, make sure to sterilize your pets and talk to your friends and family about doing the same.
In conclusion, millions of animals nationwide are getting abused by either breeders, puppy mills, or even their owner. Whether it’s abandonment, physical, or forcing them into breeding, it needs to stop! Animal could be something as careless as forgetting to sterilize them or it could be something as big as skinning them. But think about it, these animals are only around for a small portion of our lives but to them, we are around all of theirs. Why would we want to ruin it for them?
