Animal Abuse and Abandonment
By: Gianna Thayer
Imagine that you are tied to a cage, the only thing you still have, left there-no food and no water, nothing…left there to suffer and eventually die. Believe it or not people do this to their pets. About 6-8 million animals are abandoned each year. “Treat others the way you want be treated,” that’s the golden rule. Some people treat their pets like they’re nothing, that’s the way they should not be treating, a poor innocent creature. It’s not fair to the animal, they can’t do anything about it, but, you know who can? We can. Tell people the importance of animal abuse and abandonment. I wonder if we can eventually end this forever. There are ways to prevent animal abuse and abandonment, facts on it, and overpopulation in pets. One day if we really try hard enough maybe we can live in a place where animal abuse does not exist.
Many people abuse animals each year whether it’s for entertainment, or pleasure, or even happiness and that’s really just a wrong thing to do. There are ways to prevent animal abuse, for instance, opening up more “no-kill” shelters. Opening up more “no-kill” shelters will help prevent this because, instead of not even trying to help save the animal because it’s sick or injured badly, they’ll try desperately to help save the animals’ life. Another way to prevent animal abuse is by donating money, it’s as simple as that, just donate money, you might even save an animals life one day. By donating money veterinarians can buy the supplies they need to operate on an animal to save their life and get a second chance. The ASPCA says to “Call your local law enforcement department,” and to “Set a good example for others.” Every penny makes a difference. I wonder if the animal you save will thank you forever. Just remember, little things can do big things, and donate too!
To begin with it’s important to learn facts on animal abuse. For instance, a teenage girl named Faye Carey spends every Friday with Animal Control. Faye sees about 20 dogs come into the shelter a week. Faye has a facebook page dedicated just for the dogs, hoping that someone will adopt them. Her facebook page has gotten over 300 likes! The page first started by Faye wanting to rehome some kittens, now she has rehomed over 60 dogs! Also, most dogs are found roaming, abandoned, or sometimes owners can’t take care of the animals anymore. The American Humane Association say that 7-20% of animals that go to a home are no longer in that home after 6 months. To sum up, I wonder if animals know if they’re being abused? Are they thinking, what did I ever do wrong?
Lastly, this is going to be about pet overpopulation, believe it or not pet overpopulation could lead to animal abuse or abandonment. For instance, people let their pets reproduce even if they can’t take care of them, which leads to them being abandoned and neglected. The American Humane Association says, “Every year, millions of cats and dogs are euthanized in our nation’s animal shelters because there are more pets than there are responsible homes for them.” Also, when people buy a new pet but they already had another one, so they abandon the new one so they can keep the old, or sometimes it’s the other way around. My final reason is that people don’t think of all the responsibilities of getting and owning a new pet which could lead to them getting abandoned, abused, or both. Also, when shelters take the animal in, it might be too late to save them and have to euthanize (put to sleep) the animal. To conclude this just imagine what it’s like to be the animal, and what I said earlier, “Treat others the way you want to be treated.”
To sum up animal abuse and abandonment, if the animal could say one last word to you, what would it be? It’s wrong to put the animal through that and we can prevent it, donate, learn more about overpopulation in animals, and also learn about Faye carey. I believe we can make a difference if we really try hard enough.
