My name is Max and my Genius Hour project was to record or videotape Connor, and Nick while they made science experiments. If you don’t know what Genius Hour is it is a time where us sixth graders get to work on our passions. If you don’t have Genius Hour at your school I recommend doing it because it is really, really fun. We chose this project because Nick and Connor wanted to make science experiments and I wanted to do something that involved cameras, like taking pictures, or I wanted to make mini movies that were five minutes long. When Connor, Nick and I came up with the idea of me filming them while they made science experiments I automatically knew that, that was what I wanted to do. I was super excited to start right away because I knew we were going to succeed. Then, Ultimate Science was born.
The steps to get where we are now involved a lot of researching. We went over to the whiteboard table and researched a couple of experiments like Bending Water, The Unbreakable Egg, The Flipping Cup Experiment, and our most popular one, The Homemade Lava Lamp. I posted a bloopers film, then they did The Stabbing Water Experiment, the Borax Goo, and our most recent one, the Quicksand Experiment. After we researched about those experiments we decided who was bringing what the day before we did an experiment. Then in genius hour we would do the experiment.
I got a lot of outside support from my mom. She let me bring the materials we needed for the experiments and she also gave me tips of what to do with filming. Connor and Nick were the only inside support that I got. Then everything else we did on our own.
The ending product was very successful. We ended up making 8 Ultimate Science videos and all of them had more than 20 views! I uploaded the videos to YouTube. We chose YouTube over making a website because a YouTube channel is easier and more people would be able to see it.
We also had a lot of success. Like I said before, we had 8 Ultimate Science videos and all of them had more than 20 views. But 2 out of the 8 experiments failed. The Unbreakable Egg failed and our most recent one the Quicksand Experiment. We know why they failed too. Nick crushed the Egg and while we were making the Quicksand we added way too much water and not enough corn starch. If we were to redo those experiments we would not push as hard on the egg and we would use less water to make the quicksand other than that we wouldn’t change anything.
Something we are thinking about doing during the next round of Genius Hour is include some slow motion into the videos and we might add some skits. We know for sure that we are going to keep doing Ultimate Science until we can’t find anymore experiments. We might also collaborate with other kids in sixth grade. That was my Genius Hour project.
